UMW Baseball Drops Opener at Hampden-Sydney, 4-2

The University of Mary Washington baseball team dropped its season opener, 4-2, at Hampden-Sydney College on Sunday in Hampden-Sydney. The Eagles fall to 0-1 on the season.

The hosts jumped ahead early with a run in the first with a double, stolen base, and single. UMW answered with single runs in the fifth and sixth to take a 2-1 lead, but the Tigers capped the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, on two hits, a walk, a wild pitch, and a balk.

The loss spoiled a quality season debut by Eagle starter Torey Mancari, who struck out 10 hitters in five innings, allowing just three hits and one earned run. Senior Matt Abramson absorbed the loss, allowing three earned runs on three hits in three innings.

At the plate, the Eagles were led by sophomore Ben Sisk, who went 2-2 with an RBI, Sanitno Rosanova, who singled and was hit by a pitch, and Jeff Rezach, who doubled. Jonathan Haught, Chris King, and Jeff Zeisler also provided hits for the Eagles.

Mary Washington will return to action next Sunday when they visit nationally-ranked Christopher Newport University at 1:00 p.m.
