UMW Baseball Tops Apprentice, 9-3


Junior pitcher Mike Straub and senior righty Zach Hendrix combined to allow just five hits in nine innings, as the University of Mary Washington baseball team topped Newport News Apprentice School, 9-3, on Friday in Newport News. The Eagles improve to 12-19-1 on the year.

The Eagles scored a run in the third to take a 1-0, as Jonathan Haught singled and scored on a Connor Finnerty double. The Eagles added five runs in the fifth, with the key hits being Jake Rudman's two-run single, and RBI hits from Brent Steffey and Kevin Yarnell.

After the Builders scored three in the bottom of the fifth, UMW answered with three more in the seventh, as Seth Jordan and Yarnell doubled, and Haught followed with an RBI single. The Eagles rapped out 12 hits, with Steffey, Jordan, Yarnell, Haught, and Finnerty each providing two hits. Straub walked three and struck out eight, and Hendrix walked two.

The Eagles will return to action after final exams on May 6, when they visit Bridgewater College for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
