UMW Baseball Drops Twinbill to York

The University of Mary Washington baseball team dropped a doubleheader to York College on Saturday, 5-0 and 4-3, to fall to 11-18-1 on the season, and from contention for next week's Capital Athletic Conference Tournament.

In the opener, the Spartans scored once in the first, twice in the second, and added two late runs in a 5-0 win. The Eagles had just five hits, with sophomore Connor Finnerty leading the way with two singles. Jeff Zeisler and Shane Sixsmith each walked and singled.

Senior Matt Abramson absorbed the loss, allowing 13 hits and four earned runs in six innings, with no walks and eight strikeouts.

In the nightcap, the Spartans had just three hits, but scored four runs in a 4-3, eight-inning win. York scored twice in the first to gain a 2-0 lead. The Eagles scored three in the first as Jake Rudman singled, Brent Steffey doubled, and Seth Jordan singled. An RBI groundout by Santino Rosanova provided the third RBI with a run-scoring ground ball.

York answered with one in the third to tie the score, and after four scoreless innings, got a leadoff double, and scored on a pair of wild pitches for the eventual winning run. Rudman had three hits in four at bats for the Eagles, while Steffey doubled for UMW.

Junior Mike Straub allowed three runs on two hits in five innings, and reliever Nick McGovern allowed one run on one hit in three innings of relief. Straub struck out six and McGovern two.

The Eagles will be back in action on April 24 when they visit Johns Hopkins University at 4:00 p.m.
