The Mary Washington baseball team improved its record to 10-12-1 on Thursday with a 3-2 come-from-behind win against Catholic University at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles got off to a slow start in a pitcher's duel in which sophomore Jake Black threw seven strong innings giving up only one run on four hits with five strikeouts.
Heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, the Eagles were down 2-0 with five outs remaining in the game. A pinch hit single by Junior Jeff Rezach started a rally of three straight hits by Rezach, Shane Sixsmith and then an RBI single by Brent Steffey, scoring the Eagles first run of the game. Sophomore Ben Sisk knocked in the next run to tie the game. Brent Steffey scored the winning run on a passed ball to cap off an exciting eighth inning that saw three of the Eagles six hits and all of their runs.
In addition to his key hit in the rally, Sixsmith pegged out a runner at the plate in the eighth to prevent a run, and executed a 4-3 double play to end the game.
Senior pitcher Zach Hendrix picked up the win, pitching one inning while sophomore Nick McGovern closed the game out in the ninth to earn the save.
The Eagles return to conference play Friday afternoon on the road against Wesley College. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
