UMW Baseball Tops Wesley, 11-7, Advances to Sunday in CAC Tournament

The University of Mary Washington baseball team erupted for nine runs in the first three innings in eliminating Wesley College, 11-7, on Saturday in round three of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament. The Eagles, who improve to 23-13 on the season, will face either Frostburg State University or Salisbury on Sunday, tenatively at 10:00 a.m.

The Eagles scored three in the first, five in the second, and one in the third for a 9-0 lead. Senior centerfielder Jackson Clement continued his excellent play in the tournament, going 3-4 with a single, triple, and his second homer in as many days, scoring three runs and driving in four. Freshman first baseman Beattie Southerland added three hits with two runs scored and an RBI.

Eric Rehbein singled and doubled, Santino Rosanova added two hits, and Seth Jordan homered for UMW, who had 15 hits in all. Brent Steffey doubled for the Eagles.

Senior Parker Talbert gained the win for the Eagles, allowing four earned runs in 5.1 innings, with three walks and three strikeouts. Torey Mancari gained the save, allowing one earned run in 3.2 innings, with one walk and seven strikeouts.

The Eagles will face the winner of Saturday's suspended game between Frostburg and Salisbury, which will resume Sunday at 9 a.m. and FSU leading, 8-7, with two out in the bottom of the ninth, and Salisbury with runners at first and second. The Eagles will need to win two games Sunday to repeat as CAC champions.
