#22 UMW Baseball Splits Pair with St. Mary's

The 22nd ranked University of Mary Washington baseball team split a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader with St. Mary's College on Saturday in St. Mary's City, Md. The Eagles dropped the opener in 14 innings, 4-3, before erupting for nine sixth inning runs in a 10-2 win in the nightcap.

UMW fell behind, 3-0, with a pair of unearned runs allowed, in the first inning of the opener. The Eagles settled down, scoring twice in the fifth inning and once more with two out in the seventh, as Beattie Southerland (Purcellville, Va., Loudoun Valley) doubled and Eric Rehbein (Alexandria, Va., Gonzaga) provided the game-tying RBI with a single. The game went seven extra innings, with the Eagles falling in the 14th on an RBI single.

Juniors Brent Steffey (Colonial Beach, Va., Colonial Beach) and Shane Sixsmith (Alexandria, Va., West Potomac) each had three hits to lead the Eagles, while Rehbein, Southerland, and Mitchell Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio, Notre Dame Latin) each had two hits. Rehbein allowed one earned run in 5.2 innings, with one walk and three strikeouts. Torey Mancari (Warrenton, Va., Paul VI) allowed two hits in 5.2 innings with six strikeouts, and Ryan Engelking (Silver Spring, Md., DeMatha) took the loss, despite allowing just three hits in 2.2 innings.

The second game saw the Eagles erase a 2-1 deficit with nine runs in the sixth inning en route to a 10-2 win. Southerland and Jackson Clement (Fairfax, Va., Woodson) each had three hits to pace UMW, with Southerland driving in two runs and Clement scoring twice. Sixsmith added a pair of hits as well. Michael Straub (Falls Church, Va., George Mason) went the distance for UMW in improving to 2-0, as he allowed one earned run on four hits in seven innings, with two walks and seven strikeouts.

The Eagles will return to action on Monday when they visit Bridgewater College at 4:00 p.m.
