UMW Baseball Sweeps Stevenson, Improves to 8-0

The University of Mary Washington baseball team swept a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader from Stevenson University, 12-3 and 14-2, on Saturday at Dickinson Stadium. UMW improves to 8-0 on the season, and 3-0 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

In the opener, the Eagles rapped out 16 hits, led by freshman Beattie Southerland (Purcellville, Va., Loudoun Valley) 's two doubles, a single, and a hit by pitch. Freshman first baseman Jeff Rezach (Mendham, N.J., West Morris Mendham) had a pair of doubles, and Eric Rehbein (Alexandria, Va., Gonzaga) singled and doubled. Shane Sixsmith (Alexandria, Va., West Potomac), Brent Steffey (Colonial Beach, Va., Colonial Beach), and Ben Sisk (Chesterfield, Va., Cosby) each had two hits as well.

On the mound, Rehbein allowed three runs on four hits in seven innings, with one walk and three strikeouts, in improving to 3-0 on the year.

The nightcap saw UMW score six second inning runs en route to a 14-2 victory. Rezach led the way at the plate with three hits including a double, and two RBI. Jackson Clement (Fairfax, Va., Woodson) was 3-4 with four runs scored, and Santino Rosanova (Laurel, Md., DeMatha) went 2-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.

Sophomore Nick Corbin (Staunton, Va., Buffalo Gap) picked up the win in relief, throwing 3.2 innings, allowing two hits, a walk, and striking out one.

The Eagles will host Penn State Altoona in a noon doubleheader on Sunday.
