UMW Baseball Drops 7-3 Decision to Ferrum

The University of Mary Washington baseball team dropped a 7-3 decision to Ferrum College on Tuesday afternoon at a sunny Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles see their eight-game win streak come to an end and fall to 26-11 on the year.

After a scoreless first three innings, the Eagles jumped on the scoreboard first, plating a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Senior left fielder Will Wright (St. Louis, Mo., St. Louis Priory) led off with a triple and scored on an Alex Howell (Glen Allen, Va., Hermitage) RBI groundout. After Nick Espinosa (Arnold, Md., Broadneck) singled to third base, he advanced to second on a wild pitch, and moved to third on an error by the second baseman. Espinosa scored on a passed ball to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

That lead would be short lived, as Ferrum tied the score with two runs in the fifth and went ahead with four in the sixth. The Eagles cut the deficit to 6-3 after Wright doubled, advanced to third on an error, and scored on a double play. The Eagles would hit into four double plays in the first seven innings, wiping out several scoring chances.

Sophomore Ryan Engelking (Silver Spring, Md., DeMatha) took his first loss of the season allowing four runs in five innings on five hits and four walks with three strikeouts. Freshman Nick Corbin (Staunton, Va., Buffalo Gap) allowed three runs in three innings of relief with four strikeouts and no walks.

Wright led the Eagles with a double, triple, and two runs scored. Espinosa went 2-3 with two singles and a hit by pitch.

The Eagles will host \#1-ranked Johns Hopkins University on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
