UMW Baseball Sweeps Pair from Southern Virginia

The University of Mary Washington baseball team, who received votes in this week's D3Baseball.com national poll, ran its win streak to eight straight games with a doubleheader sweep from Southern Virginia University on Saturday at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 26-10 on the year. The Eagles won the opener, 7-1, before taking the nightcap, 15-6.

In game one, both teams were held scoreless through four innings. After Southern Virginia scored once in the top of the inning, the Eagles answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning. UMW added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth.

Senior center fielder Alex Howell (Glen Allen, Va., Hermitage) led UMW with a double and two singles with three RBi and a run scored. Seamus Bergen (Fredericksburg, Va., Chancellor), Eric Rehbein (Alexandria, Va., Gonzaga), Will Wright (St. Louis, Mo., St. Louis Priory), and Shane Sixsmith (Alexandria, Va., West Potomac) each had two hits to aid the Eagle effort. Rehbein picked up the win, throwing six innings and allowing one run on seven hits with no walks and six strikeouts.

The second game saw both teams score early, as Southern Virginia plated three runs in the first, before the Eagles answered with three in the bottom of the inning. Junior pitcher Parker Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va., Cape Henry Collegiate) shut the door for the Eagles, allowing one earned run in 4.2 innings in gaining the win. The Eagles erupted for seven runs in the fifth inning en route to the 15-6 win.

Bergen was 3-5 in the second game, while Wright and Robinson Dorion (Rutland, Vt., Rutland) each had two hits, including a double and triple by the former. Talbert's four hits allowed in 4.2 frames included no walks and two strikeouts.

The Eagles will host the Newport News Apprentice School on Monday at 3:00 p.m.
