The University of Mary Washington baseball team captured the 2010 Capital Athletic Conference championship with a 7-1 victory over Wesley College on Sunday in Salisbury, Md., ending the Eagles' undefeated run through the tournament. The tournament title is the eighth for the Eagles in the 20-year history of the league.

Wesley jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the first with its lone run of the day on an RBI groundout. The Eagles tied the score in the second, as Alex Howell (Glen Allen, Va., Hermitage) scored on a Seth Jordan (Springfield, Va., South County) fly ball. 

Mary Washington forged ahead with a single run in the fifth. Shane Sixsmith (Alexandria, Va., West Potomac) singled and advanced to second on a balk. After an infield single, Seamus Bergen (Fredericksburg, Va., Chancellor) provided a sacrifice fly to score Sixsmith and put the Eagles ahead. 

UMW added another run in the sixth as Will Wright (St. Louis, Mo., St. Louis Priory) singled and advanced to third on an error on Alex Howell's fielder's choice. Wright scored as Santino Rosanova (Laurel, Md., DeMatha) hit into a double play.

The Eagles pulled away with four runs in the eighth inning. Bergen and winning pitcher Eric Rehbein (Alexandria, Va., Gonzaga) singled before Wright doubled in Bergen. With two outs, Nick Espinosa (Arnold, Md., Broadneck) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Jordan provided a bases-clearing double to put the Eagles up, 7-1.

"Those four runs in the eighth were huge", said UMW head coach Tom Sheridan, who captured his 10th total conference title in 22 years at UMW. "Going into the ninth with a six-run cushion made a big difference."

Wright, Howell, and Jordan each had two hits for the Eagles, with Jordan driving in four runs. Rehbein allowed just the one first inning run in nine innings in the complete game win, allowing eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

The Eagles (22-10) will host Catholic University on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
