UMW Baseball Tops Stevenson, 10-9; Becomes Only Team in CAC Tourney Still Unbeaten

The University of Mary Washington baseball team built up a 7-1 lead, saw it slip away, rebounded to take the lead, and held on for a 10-9 victory over Stevenson University in the second round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament on Thursday afternoon in Aberdeen, Md. The Eagles improve to 20-10, and end the day as the lone unbeaten team in the event.

Stevenson scored once in the first inning, but the Eagles tied the score in the second when Shane Sixsmith (Alexandria, Va., West Potomac) scored on a wild pitch. The Eagles stormed ahead with three runs in the fourth and three in the fifth.

In the fourth, four straight Eagles walked to plate one run, and Alex Howell (Glen Allen, Va., Hermitage) added a two-run single. In the fifth inning, Seth Jordan (Springfield, Va., South County) and Jackson Clement (Fairfax, Va., Woodson) doubled, and after a balk, Seamus Bergen (Fredericksburg, Va., Chancellor) walked. Eric Rehbein (Alexandria, Va., Gonzaga) followed with a two-run single.

Stevenson cut the deficit to 7-3 with a pair of runs in the fourth, and took the lead with five more runs in the fifth to lead, 8-7. In the eighth, Seth Jordan's bases-loaded single produced two RBI, and Sixsmith added a two-out double to plate Santino Rosanova (Laurel, Md., DeMatha). The Mustangs scored once in the ninth and had a runner at third with one out, but a strikeout and ground out ended the game.

Sophomore Ryan Engelking (Silver Spring, Md., DeMatha) gained the win in relief for the Eagles, allowing one run on three hits in 3.1 innings with no walks and four strikeouts. At the plate, Will Wright (St. Louis, Mo., St. Louis Priory) and Seth Jordan each had two hits, while Eric Rehbein drove in three runs. Jordan and Alex Howell each knocked home a pair of runs.

The Eagles will face the winner of Saturday morning's Stevenson vs. Salisbury game at Salisbury at 4:00 p.m.
