UMW Baseball Tops York, 8-5, in First Round of CAC Tournament

The University of Mary Washington baseball team rallied for six seventh inning runs in defeating York College, 8-5, on Wednesday in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament in York, Pa. The Eagles improve to 19-10, while York falls to 16-11.

The Eagles trailed, 4-0, entering the seventh, but started the seventh with three straight singles, from Will Wright (St. Louis, Mo., St. Louis Priory), Alex Howell (Glen Allen, Va., Hermitage), and Santino Rosanova (Laurel, Md., DeMatha). Senior catcher Nick Espinosa (Arnold, Md., Broadneck) followed with a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-1, and freshman Seth Jordan (Springfield, Va., South County) followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 4-2. Sophomore Shane Sixsmith (Alexandria, Va., West Potomac) followed with an RBI single to load the bases. 

After a York pitching change, Jackson Clement (Fairfax, Va., Woodson) lined a double to right field to clear the bases and give UMW its first lead at 5-4, and Seamus Bergen (Fredericksburg, Va., Chancellor) followed with a suicide squeeze to plate Clement with run number six.

The Eagles added single runs in the eighth on another Espinosa sac fly and again in the ninth on an RBI single by Bergen.

Junior Zach Hendrix (Earlysville, Va., Albemarle) picked up his first win in relief, allowing one run on four hits in four innings, with one walk and three strikeouts. Wright led the Eagles with three hits (including a triple) and two runs scored, while Rosanova and Clement each adding two hits, with Clement adding the three RBI on the double.

The fifth-seeded Eagles will visit fourth-seeded Stevenson University on Thursday at 3:30 pm in the second round of the tournament. Stevenson topped third seeded Wesley, 7-4
