UMW Baseball Falls at York, 6-5

The University of Mary Washington baseball team dropped a slim 6-5 decision at York College on Friday in York, Pa. The Eagles fall to 14-6 on the season, and 7-4 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

UMW surged ahead early, scoring twice in the first inning, as senior shortstop Seamus Bergen (Fredericksburg, Va., Chancellor) led off with a single and scored on a double by Eric Rehbein (Alexandria, Va., Gonzaga), who advanced to third on an error. Will Wright (St. Louis, Mo., St. Louis Priory) and Alex Howell (Glen Allen, Va., Hermitage) followed with singles to plate Rehbein and give UMW the early lead.

York answered with two runs in the first and two in the second. The Spartans added single runs in the fourth and sixth innings to take a 6-2 lead into the eighth. Bergen plated two runs with a single to cut the Eagle deficit to 6-4, and the Eagles added another run in the ninth as freshman Seth Jordan (Springfield, Va., South County) hit a solo home run to left field. The Eagles had two runners on when the final out was recorded.

In all, the Eagles outhit York, 12-9, but stranded 12 runners on base. Bergen led the Eagles with four hits, a run and two RBI; Howell and Wright each had two hits for the Eagles. Freshman Zach Goodwyn (Spotsylvania, Va., Spotsylvania) took the loss for the Eagles, allowing five runs (four earned) in three innings, walking three. Junior Zach Hendrix (Earlysville, Va., Albemarle) pitched five solid innings of relief, allowing one earned run on five hits with one walk and five strikeouts.

The Eagles will return to CAC action on Saturday when they visit St. Mary's College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
