UMW Baseball Tops Ithaca, 8-4

Sophomore third baseman Santino Rosanova (Laurel, Md., DeMatha) had three hits in four at bats to lead the University of Mary Washington baseball team to an 8-4 win over Ithaca College on Saturday at Dickinson Stadium. the Eagles improve to 11-5 on the season.

Ithaca jumped on the scoreboard with four runs in the second inning, only to see the Eagles answer with three in the bottom of the inning. Rosanova's RBI single, as well as runs driven in by Shane Sixsmith (Alexandria, Va., West Potomac) and Seamus Bergen (Fredericksburg, Va., Chancellor) provided the spark for the Eagles in the second. 

The Eagles plated three more runs in the sixth to take the lead for good, as center fielder Alex Howell (Glen Allen, Va., Hermitage) and Rosanova provided back-to-back RBI singles to propel the rally. UMW added two runs in the eighth, as Seth Jordan (Springfield, Va., South County) doubled, and Rosanova provided another RBI single and scored on a Jackson Clement (Fairfax, Va., Woodson) RBI single.

Rosanova scored twice and drove in two runs, while Howell scored twice and knocked in one run, and Sixsmith added two RBI. Freshman Zach Goodwyn (Spotsylvania, Va., Spotsylvania) picked up the win for the Eagles, allowing three earned runs in six innings, with four walks and three strikeouts. Sophomore Ryan Engelking (Silver Spring, Md., DeMatha) provided three quality innings of relief, allowing just two base runners via singles.

Mary Washington will visit Gallaudet University on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in a makeup of a Capital Athletic Conference contest from an earlier rainout.
