UMW Baseball Splits Sunday Twinbill with Bates

The University of Mary Washington baseball team split a Sunday doubleheader with Bates College, dropping the opener 7-5 before winning the second, 14-2. The Eagles move their record to 9-5 on the season.

In the opener, the Eagles allowed two runs in the second before plating three in the bottom of the inning. Third baseman Santino Rosanova (Laurel, Md., DeMatha) singled and moved to third on a Shane Sixsmith (Alexandria, Va., West Potomac) bunt single, and both runners scored on a Jackson Clement (Fairfax, Va., Woodson) two-run double. Clement came around to score on a Seamus Bergen (Fredericksburg, Va., Chancellor) RBI single.

The Eagles upped the lead to 5-2 with two runs in the third, as Will Wright (St. Louis, Mo., St. Louis Priory) singled and Seth Jordan (Springfield, Va., South County) doubled, and both came to score on Alex Howell (Glen Allen, Va., Hermitage)'s double down the left field line. Bates took the lead with three in the fourth and one in the fifth, and added another run in the seventh for the 7-5 victory.

Jordan singled and doubled and Rosanova singled twice to pace the Eagle offense. Junior Zach Hendrix (Earlysville, Va., Albemarle) took the loss in relief, as he allowed one run in one inning.

The nightcap saw the Eagles plate 14 runs in a 14-2 win. Wright and Howell each posted a double and two singles to lead UMW, while Eric Rehbein (Alexandria, Va., Gonzaga) had two hits, three runs scored, and two RBI. Shane Sixsmith and Jackson Clement each scored four times for the Eagles, providing quality at bats at the bottom of the lineup.

Freshman Torey Mancari (Warrenton, Va., Paul VI) picked up the win for UMW, allowing one earned run in six innings, with no walks and five strikeouts.

Mary Washington will host Bridgewater College on Wednesday in another nonconference game.
