2009 UMW Baseball Season in Review

Long known as one of the top programs among the 23 at the University of Mary Washington, the baseball team won 15 games in 2009 and saw head coach Tom Sheridan join the exclusive 500-win club.

The Eagles began the season with great promise, as UMW swept a doubleheader from 2008 NCAA Tournament team Messiah College, and then defeated the number-one ranked team in the nation, Cortland State, 3-1, to move to 3-0. UMW’s young inexperienced squad fell short against a demanding schedule that included four contests in the first 10 games against the top ranked team in the nation in NCAA Division III.

The Eagles then won three straight, over Frostburg State University, Wesley College, and Catholic University. After a setback at Bridgewater, the Eagles won three more in a row, sweeping a CAC series from Gallaudet and topping Randolph-Macon College in come-from-behind fashion, 5-4, in 11 innings.

A road defeat at the hands of #17 Christopher Newport preceded a series win over Wesley College. UMW then took two of three from Stevenson University, topped Hampden-Sydney College, and dropped a set to York College in league play.

The Eagles drew top-seeded Salisbury in the opening round of the CAC Tournament, and fell in Salisbury, 7-3, moving the team to the elimination bracket. UMW was eliminated in the following round, 6-5 in 10 innings, despite outhitting its opponent, 15-7. UMW closed the year by splitting a twinbill with USA South champion North Carolina Wesleyan College, and falling at Newport News Apprentice following final exams.

Senior Andrew Cox repeated as a first team All-CAC selection after posting a 6-4 record with a 3.19 ERA in 14 appearances, including four complete games, two shutouts, and 56 strikeouts in 79 innings. He gained notoriety for his academic and athletic success by winning the UMW Male Scholar Athlete of the Year and earning first team academic all-district honors. Cox was joined on the All-CAC team by juniors Bryan Quintana (.366 average, two home runs, 21 RBI) and Will Wright (.382, one home run, 27 RBI, 26 runs scored, one strikeout in 110 at bats).
