Virginia Lottery Throwback Moment: Hewitt's Two Scores Lead '01 Women's Soccer to CAC Crown

Virginia Lottery presents today's UMW Athletics Throwback Moment. Today, we look back to the Eagle women's soccer team's march to the NCAA Tournament, as sophomore Jessica Hewitt scored a pair of goals to lead MWC past Salisbury University, 2-1, for the 2001 Capital Athletic Conference championship, on October 27, 2001.

Hewitt opened the scoring at 28:27, on an assist from Jacqui Loesch. The Sea Gulls would knot the score at 34:00, but Hewitt provided the game winner in thrilling fashion with just 25 seconds left in regulation, on an assist from Bridget White, to give the Eagles the league crown for the ninth time in 11 seasons.

The Eagles would go on to advance to the NCAA Tournament, defeating Gwynedd Mercy College in the first round, 1-0, before falling to the University of Scranton in the second round. The Eagles finished with a 15-3-3 record.
