Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Fall and Winter Sport Championships Update

Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Fall and Winter Sport Championships Update

As a result of the continued impact of COVID-19, the University of Mary Washington (UMW) will join the 10 other members of the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C), in cancelling conference championships for the fall and winter 2020-2021 seasons.

The following sports are impacted by this decision: Men's & Women's Cross Country, Field Hockey, Men's & Women's Soccer, Volleyball, Men's & Women's Indoor Track and Field, and Men's & Women's Basketball. A decision regarding spring sports will be made at a later date.

The UMW Athletic Department will continue work with the Mary Washington COVID-19 Implementation Team, the Athletics COVID-19 Action Team, the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference, and the NCAA to consider any options for playing fall and winter sports in the spring.

The Department of Athletics had hoped to return to competition in a safe and healthy way under the guidelines of the NCAA and C2C Athletic Conference, said Director of Athletics Patrick Catullo. "Regrettably, as updated information has been released, it has become clear that cancellation of fall and winter championships is the best way forward. We are working with the University's COVID-19 Implementation Team and conference colleagues on protocols for additional testing and  potential regional competition."

Catullo added, "This decision was not made lightly, and while nothing can replace the loss of championship opportunities, we will work to continue the impactful student-athlete experience. I have been inspired by the good spirits and commitment of student-athletes as they found alternative ways to support their teams.

Further announcements regarding a return to athletics competition will be made available via umweagles.com when available.
