In 2020-21, the University of Mary Washington Athletic Department is continuing its student-athlete spotlight series, "Inside the Nest", presented by Virginia Lottery. Today, we meet a senior from the equestrian team, Ruth Wilmot!
Name: Ruth Wilmot
Sport: Equestrian
Hometown: Columbia, MD
Major: Classics: Latin
Favorite Class:
Advanced Latin Grammar and Composition
Favorite Professor:
Any of the Classics professors! They're great!
Favorite part about being a UMW student-athlete:
Your team becomes your family. If you need help studying or anything else, your team is there to support you! I never rode before I came to UMW, but my team really encouraged me as I was learning about horses and equitation.
Favorite thing to do in Fredericksburg:
Definitely window shopping downtown with friends. Or walking the Canal Path.
Fun fact about me:
I never rode horses before I came to UMW. I started on the equestrian team as a walk-trot rider.
Favorite UMW memory:
There are way too many to choose from. One of my favorite memories is putting on a Latin play with my classmates junior year. It was a lot of fun!
What has playing at UMW meant to you:
Riding on the equestrian team has been one of my favorite experiences at UMW. It taught me time management skills, confidence, and so many other things.
Post-graduate plans:
I'm taking a year off to work as a paralegal before attending law school.
I would like to thank:
My scholarship donor Irene who has supported me through all four years. I wouldn't be able to do what I have done without her! Also, the equestrian coaches for teaching me how to ride.
