B101.5 Presents On This Date: Avery's Goal Lifts Field Hockey to NCAA Final, 1993

Today's "On This Date" feature, presented by B101.5, looks back at one of the biggest wins in school history, as senior Chrissie Avery caged the game's lone goal in a 1-0 victory for the Mary Washington field hockey team over Trenton State College and into the NCAA Division III national championship game. The date was November 12, 1993.

The Eagles entered the game as the stingiest defense in the nation, with goalkeeper Stephanie Lowe allowing just six goals in 22 games to that point, including 17 shutouts. The Lions would outshott the Eagles on the day, 22-5, but couldn't crack the veteran Eagle defense. Lowe finished with 12 saves on the day.

Less than nine minutes into the second half, freshman Danielle Oleson found Avery for the game's lone goal, advancing MWC to the national championship game the next day.  The Eagles fell to Cortland State in the final, 1-0, in capping the best season in school history.
