Virginia Lottery Presents On This Date: Van Maanen's late score lifts UMW past CNU, 10/20/18

Virginia Lottery presents today's On This Date in UMW Athletics history. Today, we look back to 2018, as the Eagle men's soccer team used a late goal from Ryan Van Maanen to down Christopher Newport at homecoming.

Senior Ryan Van Maanen scored the game's only goal in the 80th minute to lead the 19th ranked University of Mary Washington men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Christopher Newport University on Saturday afternoon at Homecoming at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 11-1-3 on the season.

In a battle that saw both teams have opportunities, the game remained scoreless until the 80th minute. Senior defender Gary Foley crossed the ball across the mouth of the goal to a sliding Van Maanen, who slid the ball into the open net for the game's only score.

Christopher Newport led in shots, 18-11, as well as corner kicks, 3-2. UMW goalkeeper Ken Kurtz registered six saves for the Eagles, while Zach Pedini had four for CNU.

The Eagles would go on to finish 14-1-5 on the season, win the CAC Championship for the second straight year, and advance to the NCAA Tournament.
