The mission of the Department of Athletics at the University of Mary Washington is based on the student-athlete experience, which is focused on competitive opportunities; impactful learning in and out of the classroom; equity; diversity; inclusion; and community engagement.

For months, the Department of Athletics has been planning for a return to play in a safe, healthy and equitable way as part of the University's #ForwardUMW plan and under the guidelines of the NCAA and Capital Athletic Conference. As updated information has been released regarding testing for return to athletics activity, it has become clear that the suspension of fall and winter sports through the 2020 calendar year is the best way forward.

This decision is deeply disappointing to our student-athletes, coaches, and really, all of us. While nothing can replace the loss of competition opportunities, we will work to continue the impactful student-athlete experience through new protocols for practices, workouts and continued interactions with peers and coaches. Through several recent focus groups with student-athletes, we have gained valuable insights into delivering that experience in innovative and meaningful ways.

As you know, generous participation in our Eagle Club program has made a tangible impact on our sports programs for our student-athletes. As we prepare for an eventual return to competition, it's going to further the need for support from our community. If you would like to support us with a gift to Friends of Athletics or renew your Eagle Club membership, you can do so HERE.

When you give to Friends of Athletics, you are providing critical funding for the department to enhance the UMW student-athlete experience in the following ways:

  • Development and programming for departmental leadership training, as well as other national leadership opportunities for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC)
  • Hosting nationally renowned speakers for the department, and entire campus, including topics like Back to the Nest (2019), mental wellness (2018), diversity and inclusion (2017), and psychology of peak performance (2016)
  • Boosting recruiting dollars for every team and professional development opportunities for head and assistant coaches
  • Strengthening support staff for the benefit of all teams in the areas such as athletic training staff, grounds and facilities staff, strength and conditioning staff, and sport information/marketing staff
  • Enhancing athletic facilities; including game day facilities, practice facilities, academic and study spaces, office spaces, auxiliary training spaces, and sport medicine facilities

Champion Level ($1,000+), Leader Level (500+), Flight Level (50+). Eagle Club gifts to Friends of Athletics directly support all sport programs at UMW.
