UMW Giving Day Fundraiser Nets $109,101 for UMW Athletics

The second annual Giving Day fundraiser at the University of Mary Washington proved to be very successful for the Department of Athletics, as it raised $109,101 for various fundraising accounts for the teams and department, from a whopping 809 gifts from alumni, parents, and friends.

Funds raised through Giving Day directly benefit the student-athlete experience, as money from donors is directly deposited to team fundraising accounts, which can be used for uniforms, equipment, travel, or for many other essentials.

Junior UMW softball standout pitcher Kara Deppe '19 noted, "When I met Coach Conway and was given the opportunity to continue my softball career, I changed my mind and realized I would be lost without the sport I have played for so long. The UMW athletic program has taught me how important it is to be inclusive and open-minded. There are so many different learning and teaching styles. Managing college, a social life, and sports is tough. However, I have learned that sports and just about everything else in life is about finding a balance, accentuating your strengths, and improving your weaknesses through hard work, dedication, commitment, and the help of others."

The total raised this year is nearly triple the amount raised last year in the event's first year. Numerous matching gifts aided in the successful day, which were funded by alumni, coaches, and friends of the University.

"What a great day to be an Eagle", commented UMW Director of Athletics Ken Tyler. "We are so grateful for the amazing generosity of UMW alumni, family, and friends in support of our student-athletes and staff. We are honored and humbled to be part of such an amazing team and this incredible accomplishment. Thank you to all who participated, and GO EAGLES!"

The men's and swimming program led all programs in donors, with 160, as well as dollars raised, at $12,743.06. Women's lacrosse saw donations from 73 donors, and Friends of Athletics, which supports the department in many ways, saw 63 donations. Men's tennis raised $10,440, while women's tennis raised $10,020. Nine programs saw donations from at least 40 donors, and eight programs raised at least $6,000.
