Athletics is an integral part of the UMW community.  This spring semester alone we’ve had the excitement of the men’s basketball Elite Eight appearance and two national championships in Men’s Swimming.  Student-athletes at UMW receive no scholarship money for athletics—they play for the love of their sport! 

Today we hear from Joey Marson, a senior lacrosse player.  Joey is majoring in Business Administration and is from Chantilly, VA. 

As I decided where to go to school I had three major factors in mind: academics, lacrosse, and campus. At the time, I knew that UMW had quality academics and a competitive lacrosse team that would push my limits each time I stepped in the classroom or on the field. What was in question was the campus life at UMW, until I visited campus in the spring of my senior year. Right when I stepped on campus I felt at home. Students were vibrant, making campus feel alive. After visiting campus, I made my way over to the Battlegrounds Athletic Complex to watch the lacrosse team practice. I quickly realized how awesome the fields were with two different game fields and well-kept facilities. The decision to study and play lacrosse at UMW was easy. Strong academics, quality sports team and energetic campus life.

Our men’s lacrosse team, featuring Joey and many others, have realized the highest ranking in their sport in school history!  We hope you’ll attend a men’s or women’s lacrosse match, baseball or softball game, or men’s or women’s tennis match this spring.  Our student-athletes appreciate your support!
