NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – The University of Mary Washington
men's varsity athletic teams placed in first place in the men's
standings, and the Eagles teams finished fourth in the overall
combined standings in the 2013-14 Virginia Sports Information
Directors' All-Sports Award standings. For the sixth year in a row,
Christopher Newport University took top honors. CNU has won
the title every year since 2008-09. This survey ranks the
overall winning percentages of non-NCAA Division I schools in the
state.
The Captains went 229-100-4 to finish with a 69.4% winning
percentage as they made their transition from the USA South
Athletic Conference to the Capital Athletic Conference. CNU
teams won six CAC titles and made five NCAA Division III National
Championship tournament appearances.
CNU edged out Virginia State University for the overall title as
the Trojans came in with a 135-65 record for a 67.5% winning
percentage. The Trojans won a pair of Central Intercollegiate
Athletic Association titles and made six NCAA Division II National
Championship tournament appearances. This marks the highest
finish in at least the last 14 years for the Trojans in the
survey.
The Apprentice School was third for the second straight year as the
Builders went a combined 94-46 for a 67.1% winning
percentage. Five teams for the Builders made appearances in
the United States Collegiate Athletic Association National
Championship events.
Rounding out the top five were the University of Mary Washington
(65.7%) and Randolph-Macon College (63.5%).
Winning the men's division was the University of Mary Washington
with a 95-45 record for a 67.9% winning percentage.
Christopher Newport University was second with an 87-48-2 mark for
a 64.2% winning percentage, while The Apprentice School was third
with a 72-41 record for a 63.7% winning percentage.
On the women's side, the Apprentice School had the best percentage
as the Lady Builders basketball team finished 22-5 for an 81.5%
winning percentage. Virginia State University was second as
the Lady Trojans blistered to a 78-26 mark for a 75% winning
percentage. CNU was third as the Lady Captains finished
142-52-2 to win 72.96% of its contests.
Washington & Lee University shared the most conference titles
with CNU as both won six. University of Mary Washington and
Lynchburg College had five conference crowns apiece. In
post-season appearances, University of Mary Washington had seven
with Virginia State right behind with six.
