UMW Hosts First Annual Athletics Gala to Rave Reviews

UMW Hosts First Annual Athletics Gala to Rave Reviews

The University of Mary Washington athletic department hosted its first annual gala on Thursday, May 22, with host Darrell Green joined by current Redskin all-pros DeAngelo Hall and Alfred Morris, and a sold-out crowd of 220 guests.

The festive evening began with a silent auction featuring more than 50 items, from trips to golf packages to autographed items. The program began with words from UMW President Richard V. Hurley and Director of Athletics Ken Tyler. After a formal meal, host Darrell Green opened the program with comments, and continued the evening by monitoring a panel with Hall and Morris.

A live auction followed, featuring an autographed football by Robert Griffin III, a getaway to the Greenbrier Resort, a diamond bracelet, luxury suite tickets to this season's Redskins/Cowboys game, and a two-night stay in Miami with courtside seats to a Heat/Wizards game next season.

"Our first Athletic Department Gala was an overwhelming success!" said Tyler. "We are so grateful to our sponsors and everyone who attended. Special thanks to Redskins greats Darrell Green, DeAngelo Hall and Alfred Morris. They were incredibly generous and made the evening especially memorable. The Gala was a great opportunity for us to celebrate UMW Athletics and to forge an even stronger connection with the Fredericksburg community. Over $40,000 was raised in support of our talented and dedicated student-athletes. It was a great night to be an Eagle, and we're already looking forward to next year!"

The evening concluded with photos taken with the guests.
