Members of the University of Mary Washington basketball teams participated in a community sevrice event on Wednesday at Spotswood Elementary School. Athletes handed out dictionaries to students provided by the Rappahannock Rotary Club, interacted with the children, and gave out UMW Athletics T shirts.
The student-athletes who went to Spotswood helped distribute dictionaries to third grade students at the school. The student-athletes, along with Director of Athletics Ken Tyler and Director of Athletic Development Philip Pierce, engaged the students with trivia questions, and explaining that school work is just as important as athletics or anything else.
"Being able to visit and hand out dictionaries to the
children in our Fredericksburg community was an eye opening and
humbling experience" said senior Claire Haeuptle. "We were given
the opportunity to share our love for athletics but more
importantly to emphasize that our commitment and hard work in the
classroom comes first. The childrens' excitement for their new
dictionaries was amazing to witness and allowed for us UMW athletes
to see how much of an impact we can make with such small
deeds."
