UMW Athletics Announces Hiring of George Greene as Director of Strength and Conditioning, Rachel Wheeler as Assistant Athletic Trainer

The University of Mary Washington athletic department has hired George Greene as Director of Strength and Conditioning and Rachel Wheeler as Assistant Athletic Trainer, according to Director of Athletics Ken Tyler.

"We’re very pleased to welcome Rachel and George to our staff", said Tyler on Thursday. "Rachel comes to us with great experience from Washington & Lee, an outstanding institution with a successful and broad-based athletic program much like ours." 

"We are excited and proud to announce George as our first-ever full-time Director of Strength and Conditioning.  The addition of this position will have a positive impact on all of our student-athletes and is evidence of our strong commitment to being a top-quality NCAA Division III athletic department.  George has great experience and we look forward to the innovative ways he will make our student-athletes healthier, stronger, and faster."

Wheeler comes to UMW after working for nearly five years in the profession at both the NCAA Division I and III levels. She served as a graduate assistant with the University of Virginia footbal team, and worked as a full-time employee at Washington & Lee University.

She has experience working with 24 different sports, and has experience with evaluation, communication, treatment, rehabilitation, and personal interaction. A 2009 graduate of Mercyhurst College with a Bachelor of Science degree, she was a graduate of the CAATE program. She received her Master of Education degree from the University of Virginia in 2010.

She holds licenses as a BOC Certified Athletic Trainer, a Virginia State Licensed Athletic Trainer, and CPR/AED certified by the American Red Cross.

Greene comes to UMW from Fort Bragg, NC, where he has served as a Tactical Strength and Conditioning Specialist for US Special Operations Command.  Prior to that, he spent four years as Assistant Director of Strength and Conditioning at the University of Massachusetts. He is a graduate of Springfield College with a degree in Applied Exercise Science and is finishing his masters through Fort Hays State in Health and Human Performance. He is a certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and Sports Performance Coach. George will be Mary Washington’s first-ever Director of Strength and Conditioning and will be working with all varsity student-athletes.
