YORK, Pa. -- The Capital Athletic Conference announced its
March 18, 2013, weekly award winners:
BASEBALL
Mary Washington senior first baseman SETH JORDAN (Springfield,
Va./South County), UMW junior pitcher JAKE BLACK (Fredericksburg,
Va./Colonial Forge) and Salisbury sophomore pitcher DAN FEIN
(Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) were selected as the CAC Baseball
Athletes of the Week.
Jordan was named the Baseball Player of the Week after hitting
9-for-16 (.562) in four games last week, including 8-for-11 in
UMW’s three-game sweep vs. St. Mary’s. He had three
doubles, a walk, three of his five RBI and five of his six runs
scored vs. SMC. He was also perfect in 45 fielding attempts.
Black was named the Baseball Co-Pitcher of the Week after throwing
10 shutout innings out of the bullpen, including the last seven vs.
SMC to get the win in UMW’s 14-inning battle. Black allowed
two hits and two walks with six K’s in the week.
Fein was named the Baseball Co-Pitcher of the Week after getting a
win against 8th-ranked Christopher Newport in his first collegiate
start and another against York. In 10 shutout innings, he allowed
six hits and three walks while fanning 11.
SOFTBALL
Wesley junior third baseman ASHLY BENDOROVICH (Levittown,
Pa./Pennsbury) and Salisbury sophomore RACHEL JOHNSON (Preston,
Md./Colonel Richardson) were selected as the CAC Softball Athletes
of the Week.
Bendorovich was named the Softball Player of the Week after posting
a .435 batting average (10-for-23) with two homers, nine runs
scored and 10 RBI as the Wolverines posted a 5-2 record this week
in Spring Break games in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Bendorovich had three
multi-hit games and had at least one hit in six of the seven
contests as the Wolverines evened their record at 5-5 with
three-straight wins.
Johnson was named the Softball Pitcher of the Week for the
third-straight week after posting a 3-0 record in three
appearances. Johnson threw 15.1 shutout innings against three
different opponents, allowing eight hits and two walks while
recording 30 strikeouts. She entered Saturday’s game vs.
Cortland State trailing 2-0, but silenced the visitors the rest of
the way to get the win. She also recorded her seventh complete-game
shutout against Ithaca.
MEN’S LACROSSE
Mary Washington junior attack LUKE DICK (Annapolis, Md./Archbishop
Spalding) and Marymount junior goalie DEREK DIGIOVANNI (Midlothian,
Va./Cosby) were named the CAC Men’s Lacrosse Players of the
Week.
Dick was named the Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the
Week after firing home eight goals and adding four assists for 12
points in a pair of UMW victories. Dick started with seven points
on five goals and two assists in a midweek victory over Goucher,
then followed up with three scores and two helpers in
Saturday’s triumph over Whittier as the Eagles improved to
5-1 for the season.
DiGiovanni was named the Men’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of
the Week after recording 28 saves while allowing 11 goals for a
71.8 save percentage in two non-conference victories for the
Saints. Digiovanni had 15 stops in a 9-6 complete-game victory over
Gwynedd-Mercy, then denied 13 attempts in a victory over
Southwestern that lifted MU to its fourth win in five games this
season.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Salisbury senior attack KATIE BOLLHORST (Severna Park, Md./St.
Mary’s), York junior attack ERICA MULFORD (Crownsville,
Md./Seton Keough) and Salisbury junior goalkeeper ASHTON WHEATLEY
(Cambridge, Md./Salisbury School) were named the CAC Women’s
Lacrosse Players of the Week.
Bollhorst was named the Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Co-Player
of the Week after leading the Gulls with five goals and eight
assists in two non-conference victories, including a 13-7 decision
over third-ranked Cortland State.
Mulford was named the Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Co-Player of
the Week after finding the back of the net nine times on 10 shots
and adding two assists as the 10th-ranked Spartans were victorious
against 13th-ranked Catholic and Stevens to improve to 5-1 this
season.
Wheatley was named the Women’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of
the Week after anchoring strong defensive efforts in victories over
third-ranked Cortland State and Brockport State. She made 10 saves
in each game, recording a 60.6 save percentage for the week,
including holding the Red Dragons to just seven goals after
averaging 16 scores entering the game and several point-blank and
free position stops against Brockport State.
Special Mention: St. Mary’s senior attack EMILY SHAFER
(Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) dished out eight assists, tying a
team record, on the way to a nine-point game, in SMC’s
one-goal loss to McDaniel.
