UMW's Nick McIntyre, Mackenzie Maguire Named CAC Athletes of the Week

Salisbury senior Kyle Goodwin and Mary Washington junior Nick McIntyre were honored as the CAC Baseball Players of the Week for March 7, 2016.  

Player of the Week

Salisbury senior Kyle Goodwin was honored as the the CAC Player of the Week after hitting .667 (10-for-15) with eight RBIs, eight runs scored and three home runs in a 2-1 week for the Sea Gulls. In a win over Johns Hopkins, Goodwin tallied half of the team's hits and accounted for over half of its runs. He also hit two doubles and one triple, slugged 1.533 and notched 23 total bases on the week. 

Pitcher of the Week

Nick McIntyre | Mary Washington | Jr. | RHP

Mary Washington junior righthander Nick McIntyre was named the CAC Pitcher of the Week after tossing a complete-game two-hit shutout in a 1-0 win over Plattsburgh State on Thursday. McIntyre struck out 10 batters with just one walk in the victory. He has a 3.00 ERA this season with a team-high three wins for the 18th-ranked Eagles.

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

Four CAC teams are ranked in the D3baseball.com National Poll, with Frostburg State at No. 6, Salisbury at No. 7, Mary Washington at No. 18 and Christopher Newport at No. 24 ... York defeated Penn State Harrisburg 4-1 in the first CAC contest of the year on Saturday ... CNU's Adam Emerson retired all five batters he faced this week, striking out four of them. First, he earned a 3-out save against Bridgewater on Thursday, improving to 3-for-3 in save opportunities this season with a pair of strikeouts. Then, in a pivotal moment against Neumann, he was called on with two on and 1 out in the top of the 9th. With a runner 90 feet from home, he struck out back-to-back hitters to escape the jam. The CNU offense then picked up two runs in the bottom half to walk off winners and hand Emerson his first victory of the year ... Frostburg State sophomore Greg Schneider tossed his second 14 strikeout game of the season on Saturday as the Bobcats defeated Keystone 5-1. Schneider scattered just four hits and opened the game in stellar fashion as he struckout the side in the first frame, along with two batters in the second, third and fourth innings ... Mary Washington senior LF Mitch Moynihan hit safely in each of the Eagles wins last week, with 14 hits in 30 at bats for a .468 average. He scored 11 runs and drove in eight as UMW went 6-1. He had three hits against NC Wesleyan including a double with four RBI, and added three hits against Johnson & Wales. He had two knocks against Catholic, Lehman, and Penn College ... St. Mary's Holden Marshall paced the Seahawks by contributing two hits, cracking his first career triple and recording two RBIs last week against No. 16 Randolph-Macon ... Southern Virginia's Craig Reeves is second on team with a .308 avg., and hit back-to-back home runs in a 9-8 win over Greensboro last week ... York's Joel Kenney tossed eight innings in leading the Spartans to a 4-1 win over Penn State Harrisburg, striking out a career-high nine batters with just one walk and eight hits. Sean Mohollen hit the game-winning home run for the Spartans vs. Penn State Harrisburg and for the week totaled four RBIs, three walks, three runs scored and a stolen base. 

 

A pair of freshmen captured this week's conference awards as Mary Washington's Mackenzie Maguire and Christopher Newport's Emma Walsh were named the CAC Women's Lacrosse Players of the Week for March 7, 2016.  

Offensive Player of the Week

Mary Washington freshman Mackenzie Maguire secured CAC Offensive Player of the Week accolades after leading the 18th-ranked Eagles to wins at Meredith and Southern Virginia with 10 goals and three assists on the week. Maguire tallied six goals and three assists against Meredith on Wednesday, before scoring four times in the Eagles' CAC-opening win over Southern Virginia. She has 19 goals and four assists for the season. 

Defensive Player of the Week

Emma Walsh | Christopher Newport | Fr. | GK

Marshall, Va. Highland    

Christopher Newport freshman Emma Walsh was tabbed as the CAC Defensive Player of the Week after leading the Captains to a pair of victories, including the program's first-ever triumph over a team ranked in the IWLCA Top-10. On Thursday, she guided CNU to a 9-8 victory over No. 10 Catholic with a career-high five ground balls and 14 saves, including eight stops in the second half to prevent a comeback from Catholic. She also made three saves on free-position attempts while helping the defense stop five of Catholic's six eight-meter opportunities during the game. Two days later, Walsh continued her week with 10 more saves during a 15-5 triumph over Lebanon Valley. Once again, she excelled during free-position opportunities as she made five stops on eight-meter shots. Overall, Walsh finished the week with 24 saves and seven ground balls. Eight of her saves came on free-position attempts as she helped the defense stop 13 of the opposition's 15 total eight-meter opportunities.

Four teams are ranked in the Nike/Lacrosse Magazine Rankings, with Salisbury at No. 7, York at No. 8 and Mary Washington at No. 17 and St. Mary's at No. 18 ... Mary Washington (6-0), Salisbury (4-0) and St. Mary's (4-0) remain unbeaten in 2016 ... Frostburg State's Morgan Cavey finished her career-opening weekend with five goals and one assist in a 1-1 week for the Bobcats. Cavey tallied four goals, incluidng the game-winner in overtime, as Frostburg State rallied past Virginia Wesleyan, 12-11 ... Marymount went 2-0 last week with wins over Goucher and Bridgewater. Kelly Campbell scored a career- and game-high four goals in the 10-8 victory over Bridgewater ... St. Mary's Tori Poffenberger collected her 150th career point with a four-point performance in a 12-10 win at Randolph-Macon. Poffenberger began St. Mary's 2-0 week with season-bests of four assists and seven points in a dominant 18-8 win at McDaniel, before notching three goals and one assist vs. Randolph-Macon. Goalkeeper Kayla Dunn recorded a career-best 13 saves against McDaniel ... Salisbury defeated Washington & Lee 14-5 in its lone game of the week. Gabbi Nieves led the SU attack with four goals, three draw controls and three caused turnovers ... Southern Virginia's Zoe Bradshaw tallied eight goals and two assists in a 1-1 week for the Knights, and now has 12 goals on the year. Bradshaw was involved in half of the goals in the 14-5 win over Randolph ... Wesley went 1-2 on the week. Freshman Bailey Olds tallied three goals and seven assists in a 19-2 blowout against Mt. St. Vincent, and a goal against Misericordia ... York posted a pair of 8-5 wins over No. 14 Messiah and Haverford last week. Senior defender Megan Strauch totaled 10 ground balls, six draw controls, three caused turnovers and two goals for the week. For the season, Strauch has 16 ground balls, 10 draw controls, six caused turnovers and two goals and one assist on just two shots.
