UMW Welcomes Back Student-Athletes for 2014-15; Adds Wesley Berry as Member of Eagle Nation

The University of Mary Washington athletic department welcomed back the student-athletes with an all-athlete meeting on Wednesday night at the Anderson Center. The highlight of the night was the welcoming of a new member of the athletic department, Wesley Berry.

The student-athletes were treated to refreshments and a slideshow before the program, which included comments from Dr. Doug Searcy, Dr. Lynne Richardson, new Director of Strength and Conditioning George Greene, and NFL Hall of Famer Darrell Green.

The Eagles proudly welcomed a new member of their team, as Wesley Berry was welcomed with baseball gear and a rousing standing ovation from everyone in attendance. Wesley was matched with All-America tennis player Tyler Carey through Friends of Jacqueline, a group that matches children with brain cancer with athletes. Wesley, who is a Yankees fan, will be cheering on Tyler, the men's tennis team, and all UMW teams as an official member of the department!

Director of Athletics Ken Tyler addressed the department with a presentation, including goals, policies, and a motivational video from Admiral William McRaven.

"It's always special when we gather together as an entire Eagle Nation, and it definitely was last night as we welcomed Wesley Berry into our family", said Tyler.  "Wesley's courage and toughness is an inspiration to us all. Last night's festivities set the stage for what I'm sure will be a great year to be an Eagle!"

The fall sports at UMW begin on Friday, as men's soccer hosts Eastern Mennonite University at 2:30 pm, and women's soccer hosts Shenandoah university at 5 p.m. Volleyball opens at DeSales University against Albright College at 5 p.m. and Baruch at 7 p.m.

Special Assistant Darrell Green attempts to convert the department's Dallas Cowboys fans, Dee Conway and Teresa Seay.
