YORK, Pa. — First-year CAC member Christopher Newport
still leads the pack in the chase for the 2013-14 Richard C. Cook
All-Sports Award, but there are three other teams within 10.5
points of the Captains heading into the spring season, which
includes nine of the conference’s 21 championship sports.
Four teams have won multiple championships so far this year,
creating the tightest race in conference history.
The highlight of the winter season was Mary Washington, winning
three of six championships, to move into second place in the
overall Richard C. Cook All-Sports standings (96.5 pts.), as well
as second place in both the men’s and women’s
Commissioners Cup standings. The Eagles captured top honors in
men’s basketball, men’s swimming and women’s
swimming while adding a second-place finish in women’s indoor
track & field.
UMW trails CNU (103.5 pts.) in the overall standings by just seven
points heading into the spring season. Right behind the Eagles are
Salisbury (95.0 pts.) and York (93.0 pts.), creating a crowd at the
top of the standings.
CNU maintained its overall lead, and leads the Women’s
Commissioners Cup chase (68 pts.) with a championship performance
in women’s indoor track & field and a second-place finish
in the women’s basketball. The Captains also saw the
men’s basketball team advance to the conference championship
game. CNU boasts three championships in its initial CAC
campaign.
Salisbury added a men’s indoor track & field title to its
fall championship field hockey title to remain a challenger in the
overall race and gain the lead in the Men’s Commissioners Cup
standings (43.0 pts.).
York, which is fourth in the overall all-sports chase and third in
both the men’s and women’s Commissioners Cup standings,
picked up its conference-best fourth championship trophy in 2013-14
when the women’s basketball team claimed the title. YCP
captured top honors in men’s cross country, men’s
soccer and women’s soccer during the fall.
St. Mary’s, which posted second-place finishes in both
men’s and women’s swimming, is solidly in fifth place
in all three categories, while long-time rival Marymount moved into
second place in the all-sports chase and the Women’s
Commissioners Cup thanks to strong performances in women’s
basketball and women’s swimming. Wesley (42.0 pts.) and
Frostburg State (33.0) will challenge the Saints for the sixth
position in the spring season.
