UMW Places 132 on CAC Academic Squad

YORK, Pa – The Capital Athletic Conference announced that a record 1,197 student-athletes were named to the 2013-14 All-Academic Team, an average of 119 student-athletes per full member institution.

The 1,197 honorees marks the third time in CAC history that over 1,000 student-athletes have earned All-Academic recognition. With the additions of Christopher Newport University, Penn State Harrisburg and Southern Virginia University, the 2013-14 school year was the first year that the CAC had 10 full members. In addition, the conference added New Jersey City University and William Paterson University as associate members in golf.

Student-athletes in one or more CAC championship sports that attain a 3.20 grade point average (GPA) for the academic year earn a spot on the All-Academic team. Over 40% of CAC student-athletes posted a 3.20 GPA this year (1,197 of 2,985, 40.1%).

Six schools tallied at least 100 student-athletes on the CAC All-Academic team, including a CAC-leading 187 honorees on Salisbury University teams. York College (Pa.), the only CAC school to sponsor all 21 championship sports, was close behind with 170 honorees while St. Mary’s College (Md.) was third on the list with 145 student-athletes.

St. Mary’s and newcomer Southern Virginia led the way in percentage of student-athletes on the All-Academic team, each landing 48.7% of student-athletes on the team. This marks the seventh-straight year that St. Mary’s sits atop the percentage standings. Salisbury was third on the percentage list at 47.9%, followed by York (43.5%) and Penn State Harrisburg (41.9%). Nine CAC full member institutions placed more than one-third of their student-athletes on the All-Academic team.

Christopher Newport University (132), the University of Mary Washington (132), and Frostburg State University (117) also placed more than 100 student-athletes on the 2013-14 All-Academic team.
